ROOT Version 5.12/00 Patch Release Notes

A new production version ROOT 5.12/00g has been released July 5, 2007.

Binaries are currently not available for patch releases.

The complete source tree for all systems (17.8 MB) is available here:

Alternatively get the source from CVS using:

      cvs -d :pserver:cvs@root.cern.ch:/user/cvs export -r v5-12-00g root

After obtaining the source read the file root/README/INSTALL.

Fix in the build scripts so "make rpm" and "make debian" will work properly (--disable-builtin-gsl has been deprecated in ./configure, but was still used in the build scripts).

In the (rare) case where a request to the TFileCacheRead object lead to the loading from the file of some block BUT did not lead to the loading of the request block itself, we revert to the non-cache case (in TFile::ReadBuffer) which requires the file to put at the expected offset (aka GetRefOffset). This issues lead to message of the style:

or simply a crash. This fix solves issues: 20740 and 20820.
Change a loop from 'while' to 'for' to properly handle 'continue'. This prevents an infinite loop in the case described by 20819.
Fix case when looking up a data member by name in TClass::GetRealData() add a match ignoring array dimensions to allow for schema evolution where a fixed-size array changes size.
Fix several memory leaks in xrootd.
A fix for TRolke which allows also calculation for more than 170 Events.

The previous fix on the 5.12 branch was too aggressive. We do need to initialize the fTree data member before creating the leaves, however we must delay creating the basket until after we have the leaves otherwise we do not know if the basket needs to adjust to variable-sized arrays of leaf data.

Fix problem with TLeaf::GetLeafCounter() using an uninitialized fTree data member in a branch when called by a TLeafI constructor. The branch constructor was creating leaves before it had initialized its fTree data member and the leaf constructor was eventually calling TLeaf::GetLeafCounter() which needed to have a valid fTree in the owning branch.

When deleting an emaluated object also delete the variable size array of int/float/etc..

Fix in TString so one can do:

   TString a("abc");
   int i=0;
   while (a[i++])
   ..

Make sure that gROOT->GetClass("vector") always find its dictionary (it is registered in the TClassTable as vector >).
Another fix for the ordering of entry numbers when using the fast cloning. This affect some cases where the first two baskets where stored out of order (due to deletion within the file, for example with AutoSave on).
Properly reset a string when generating the branchname for MakeClass.
In TTreeCache::FillBuffer add a protection to prevent the cache to grow for ever in case the estimation of fEntryNext is not accurate enough. This case may happen when a TEventlist has been defined and the distribution of entries in the list is far from being uniform.
Remove any artifical limitation in branch names.
When using a var_arg more than once, one should reset (this is necessary on AMD64).
Implement a simpler and faster algorithm in the TLeaf constructor when encountering a leaf with a "[".

Increase of some internal CINT tables to accommodate very large dictionaries (ATLAS request).
Fix in TMapFile that caused it not to be able to connect to a shared memory segment.
Fix in TChain the case of a missing file and the new TTreeChache.
Fix problem with printing very long branch names in TBranch::Print().
Insure that in TTree::MakeClass()/MakeSelector() we consistently use the same name for the branch pointer variables.
Fix in Makefile to build the CINT stdfunc.ddl and to fix parallel make.
Fix in TRFIOFile and TCastorFile to be able to build with old Castor 1 libraries.
