A slight update on this: By moving my delete and new statements a bit, I was able to keep the object in memory, which allows me to use Draw() and still be able to rotate/manipulate the object in the canvas, which is what I really wanted to do anyway. Of course, this still does not explain why DrawCopy() defaults to a scatter plot in this application...
