Internal Compiler error in g++ (egcs version 1.0.3)

Heya, 

I have just tried to compile ROOT (version 2.22) using g++ (gcc
version egcs-2.90.29 980515 (egcs-1.0.3 release)) on a Linux 2.0.36 #1
Tue Jan 19 11:13:28 CET 1999 i686 unknown, and got an internal
compiler error when compiling the method 

  int TGenerator::ImportParticles(class TClonesArray *, const char * = "")

in EG_Generator.cxx.

Now, I don't expect anyone to help me out with the
complier bug, but has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, how did
you work around it e.g., will it surfice to update g++, or can the
source be modified, so that it isn't a problem?
