Links and references

Frames can be connected to allow data transfer or navigation. These connections are established with two types of objects, links and references. Users establish links and references using the commands provided on the Edit menu.

A link allows data transfer between two points and is used to maintain the same data in more than one location. Each link has a single source and a single destination, though multiple links can be set from the same source. Only the source data can be edited; the destination data is synchronized with the source.

Links are represented by loops that enclose the source and destination models. Users traverse links from the destination to the source by clicking on the link loop.

A reference supports navigation between related data. References provide a powerful organizational tool that can be used to support features like hypertext and annotation. As with links, each reference has a single source and a single destination. When a user traverses a reference, the data can be displayed in a separate window, or replace the current context.

Frame level references are represented by loops that encompass the frame. You can traverse the reference by clicking on the link arrow.
