Quick start introduction

To help you get started quickly and to serve as a quick reference, Part 1, "A Quick Start," summarizes how to use the tools necessary to build CommonPoint applications. Part 1 is not a substitute for the rest of this book. Each chapter summarizes the steps involved in accomplishing a task, or collects the information you need to use the Taligent build environment on AIX.

Chapter 1, "Preparing to work on AIX," helps you quickly set up your AIX environment so that you can start building your application.

Chapter 3, "Editing and browsing with SNiFF+," details how to set up and use SNiFF+` for editing and managing your project.

Chapter 4, "Debugging your application," enumerates the steps to follow when debugging a CommonPoint application system program.

Chapter 5, "Troubleshooting common problems," describes some common AIX and CommonPoint application system symptoms and ways to respond to them. This chapter also describes some of the common actions you might have to perform after you have identified a specific problem.

Chapter 6, "Using AIX," provides some AIX or UNIX commands to consider if you are having difficulty performing tasks common to your usual operating environment.

NOTE Almost all UNIX command names are lowercase. In contrast, Taligent UNIX command names follow the Taligent naming convention for C++ names: the first letter of each word is capitalized and the remaining letters of each word are mixed case, such as CommonPoint.
