 I understand you did
  1. x basic3d.C
  2. go to TCanvas window menu -> View -> View with X3D
  3. Nothing happens.

  It is correct !!! "View with X3D" shows x3d view of the current Pad. The current pad
of the basic3d.C macro is a "main" canvas. That has no 3d Object and by this reason
you got np x3d window.

  Try to change the current Pad (for example click with middle button onto the pad with
"basic" and then try "View with X3D" again.
