I retract my previous statement.

I was able to get root to compile on Solaris (though not h2root or 
g2root, but that may be my problem) by applying the following patch to 
TGX11.h.

This is really a compiler bug that causes this problem, but a simple 
patch to ROOT fixes it; Rene has already agreed to put it in future 
releases.
