in LaTeX, this is done by introducing different modes (LR mode, math
mode, ...) where some characters have different meanings. In TLatex, there
is only one "plain" mode that is more like LaTeX math mode than LR mode.
Please do understand that I am *not* proposing to introduce different
modes in TLatex. My point was to show the difference between TLatex and
LaTeX. The way you/the ROOT team did it is (in my opinion) the most
efficient way, and I can live with _{} to get the subscript.
