Hi Steve,

The Autoconfed version of ROOT has sufffered bit rot since it was
contributed over a year ago. The ROOT source tree has changed so much since
then that it would almost be easier to start such an effort form scratch.
The macros from the Autoconfed version of ROOT would still be useful though,
as that was the lions share of the work.

FYI, Don't confuse the current ROOT build architecture with an Autoconfed
package - ROOT has nothing in common with an Autoconfed package other than
the cosmetic look of a hand-written script named "configure" that takes
flags that look like Autoconf flags. In particular, ROOT doesn't adapt the
source code or the build to a dynamic discovery of the current build
context. ROOT is still only supoported on a handful of systems, and the
list of supported systems is static.

Regards, Matt
