The Linux machine I setup on our LAN gets only an ip address, but no hostname. Although applications like ping, telnet, ftp all seem to work fine (java's socket class also seem to work ok as well), but root's TSocket, TNetFile, TFile/rootd doesn;t seem to work with machines that only has an ip address. I think the problem comes from the 'gethostbyaddr' call, which would fail when the machine you connect to (from another on the LAN) has only ip address (this is the case for my machine). but I'm not sure about this. quan ________________ USTC Alumni Email System, http://mail.ustc.edu, FREE Signup.
