I did not try to reproduce what you said myself.
I'd like to highlight if the last version of ROOT is compiled with VC++ v.6.0 and you use these libraries "as is" you have to
compile your piece
of code with the same version of compiler or higher.
This is true for either compiler /platform combination (UNIX included).
