But maybe you should start working with the tutorials : http://root.cern.ch/root/Tutorials.html That are also on your disk under $ROOTSYS/tutorials. Browsing the 'HOWTO's' : http://root.cern.ch/root/Howto.html Will certainly answer some of questions you may have when first trying to really use root to performù some task.
