Hi Colin,

   with RH7 you are probably using XFree86 4.0.1. By default v4 has backing
store and save unders turned off (default for v3.x.y was on). To turn it on
add the following line in the "Screen" section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:

Option "BackingStore"

this turns on both backing store and save unders (check with xdpyinfo).
