Dear Sir,

My name is Swananda.Bhat & I am in my final year Computer Science engg, BMS college, Bangalore, India.. I am doing my project on the 'DISTRIBUTED COMPOUND DOCUMENT EDITOR'.I have a few problems in designing the EDITOR & i was hoping you will be able to help me.I came across your email address when i was seraching the net for some help. I would sincerly appreciate all the help you could give me.I will give you a breif introduction about my project ,before i tell you what are the problems i am facing.

The basis of the storage structure is that any data created on a particular machine is physically stored only on that machine.A compound document is a document that has more than one kind of content in it. For example, a document with text and pictures in it counts as a compound document & allows all the kinds of content in the document to be directly edited, in place, in the document. Further, there is no limit on how many kinds of content can appear together in a single document. You could combine fifty different kinds of content into a document, and have them all live and editable. We call each of these bits of content a "part" and a part handler handles each part.

In my design i assume that when the user wants to edit a 'part', he simply doulble-clicks the mouse pointer on the part . When this happens I want to open the application that created the part( for eg : if the part was a .doc then i want to open MS word) and open the part in that application i.e. I want to pass the name of that document part implicitally to the application. If you could tell me how I could open the application & how I could instruct the application to implicitally open that document part, I would be very grateful .Also i would want to know how i could an embedd object into another i.e. How i could embedd a .bmp or a .jpeg image into a .txt or .doc object & vice-versa.Is there any method to do all this in JAVA?.

I would really appreciate if you could reply back as soon as possible.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerly,

Swananda.Bhat.
