Hi Ken, we are the INTEGRAL Science Data Centre ( http://isdc.unige.ch/ ) and use ROOT for our display tools and the root interpreter for our standard and off-line analysis of the INTEGRAL science data. We have developed a layer on top of cfitsio. It is a C (not C++) library with easy access to FITS images and FITS tables. We call it DAL (Data Access Layer). We also have implemented the interface to use these functions in a root interpreter. We have linked these library together with other libraries into a new program called isdcroot which is an enhancement of the root program. With isdcroot we can interactively read and write FITS files. If you are interested in this library we can give you the code with user manuals. By the way, next month we have a meeting with Fons to discuss a better image display in ROOT.
