See examples of 2-D fits in $ROOTSYS/tutorials/fit2.C, fit2a.C, fit2d.C

You do not need TMultiDimFit to fit a 2-D histogram with gaussians.
TMultiDimFit can be used to:
  - estimate the best expression representing your data
  - fit the found expression to the data
