Hi Christian,

pdg.dat was an obsolete file (now deleted from CVS).

The TDatabasePDG class is initialized by reading $ROOTSYS/etc/pdg_table.txt by
default. You can also read your own table if you like (see TDatabasePDG).

You can find an example of use of TDatabasePDG and TParticle in
TPythia/TPythia6.
