I think the Fig thing would be very intresting, since you'll be able to open the file in XFig (my drawing tool of choice) and do various fun stuff. Metapost is intresting since it produces high-quality output - much more so then most other programs can do, and then it integrates well with TeX. (How many articles are written in Word these days - I think LaTeX is still the typesetting system of choice for most people - no wonder). Ok, so it may be a bit more tricky, and probably not something you can get 3rd-party libraries for easily, but I thought it worth a mention.
