Hi Thomas,

sometime early next year we plan to come with a first release
of an image processing package for ROOT. This will solve all
these problems. The package is currently being developed by
Reiner Rohlfs (Reiner.Rohlfs@obs.unige.ch) based on requirements
of the astronomy community.

Concerning your X11 error you can use xmon
(http://www.faqs.org/faqs/motif-faq/part9/section-41.html) to
analyze which X message causes the error and send me the
trace or send me a small program demonstrating the problem.

Cheers, Fons.
