 Hi Simon,
use
 gClient->GetPicture(picName);

where picName is a name/path of XPM file.
Foe example:

 TGPicture* pic = gClient->GetPicture("worldmap.xpm");

Check also $ROOTSYS/tutorials/WorldMap.C example
from recent release of ROOT.
