Hi,

You do not mention which version of ROOT you are trying to compile.
We have fixed a similar problem relatively recently.

This is not related to gcc 3.1 :

  ~> gcc -v
  Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.66/specs
  gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
  ~> uname -s -r
  Linux 2.4.17
  ~> root
  root [0] gROOT->GetVersion()
  (const char* 0x8157424)"3.03/06"
  root [1] gSystem->L<[Tab]>
   *** Break *** segmentation violation

same with

  ~> uname -s -r
  Linux 2.4.9-31
  ~> gcc -v
  Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/specs
  gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98)

Cheers,
Rolf
