I cannot reproduce this problem. Which version are you using?
Could you do the following
cd $ROOTSYS/tutorials
root -b -q hsimple.C
g++ -o cmerge cmerge.cxx `root-config --cflags --libs`
cmerge
where cmerge.cxx is the file below
