Thank you for your reply, maybe I am doing someting wrong, but
here is my terminal session as described in 
http://root.cern.ch/root/CVS.html:

[localhost:~/ROOT] christian% setenv 
CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs@root.cern.ch:/user/cvs
[localhost:~/ROOT] christian% cvs login
(Logging in to cvs@root.cern.ch)
CVS password:
cvs [login aborted]: authorization failed: server root.cern.ch rejected 
access
[localhost:~/ROOT] christian%

As far as I remember, this is how I logged in to CVS earlier.

If you do not see any mistake, could the reason be that
I have switched to a different Internet service provider:
In contrast to the modem login, I am now using ADSL,
however, the Austrian Telecom (Aon) is using PPtP and not PPPoE.
