If you do not want to look at the Users Guide, you can read:
  -The ROOT Cheat Sheet by Steve Beach. at:
    ftp://root.cern.ch.root/rootcheat.ps.gz

  - The FNAL Root tutorials at:
    http://www-cpd.fnal.gov/root/

  - The Root HOWTos at:
    http://root.cern.ch/root/Howto.html

  - last but not least look at the tutorials and execute them
    $ROOTSYS/tutorials/*.C
