[ROOT] how compression is done in ROOT branch

hi,  
   I am trying to understand how the compression in 
   a ROOT branch is done.
   Block by block ? And there is no relation between
   blocks ???
   
   In particular, suppose I have a branch with
   billions of entries.
   will there be time difference between the time
   for accessing, say, 1000 entries 
   in the beginning of the branch
   and near the end of the branch ?
