Ed,

I also have had success.  My problem was solved by using WinZIP to
uncompress and untar the binary distribution.  When I attempted to use the
tar command from a cygwin window, I was unable to get ROOT to run even
though all of the files/folders seemed to uncompress correctly.  Anyone know
why tar in cygwin did not work for me?

  For what its worth, I was able to run using root_v3.04.01win32gdk.tar on
Win2k.  However, I have had problems with the application not exiting when
run on WinXP
