[ROOT] update a TTree in a python script

I am doing some system maitenance type of jobs
using python scripts under Solaris.

I want to store some data obtained in those scripts in
a tree in a Root file.
There may be a general way to interface ROOT with python.
But I just want, ASAP, a few basic tree functions
like creating a tree, SetBranch...(), Fill()
to be accessible in python scripts.

Does anyone have an example of foo.C and foo.py,
plus a setup procedure
on how to do this?
Thanks,
HP
