True, the palette is not drawn when you concatenate the Z option with CONT1. I think the initial idea behind that was that the palette is drawn only with 2D representations showing colored intervals (like COL, SURF1, etc ...). In the case of "CONT1 representation" only a line is drawn whereas the palette in shows an "colored interval". But may be that could make also sense to have the palette in that case.
