Hi Gene, Aliases an utility used by TTreeFormula. They have no particular advantages besides being short-cuts and being saved. They are used by TTreeFormula as simple string substitution. Compared to your solution the Aliases are missing a 'creation' validity check. (i.e. if an Alias is incorrect you will only be warned when it is actually used in TTreeFormula). Cheers, Philippe. -----Original Message----- From: owner-roottalk@pcroot.cern.ch [mailto:owner-roottalk@pcroot.cern.ch]On Behalf Of Gene Van Buren Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 2:32 PM To: roottalk@pcroot.cern.ch Subject: [ROOT] TTree::SetAlias I see that variable "aliases" have been introduced into TTree recently (30 June patch). While I have not yet used them, they sounds strikingly similar to what I have been doing via TTreeFormulas for quite some time now. I am curious as to the differences between these aliases and TTreeFormulas. One thing I can see immediately is that the aliases can be persistent (wonderful!). Are there other differences? Are aliases parsed more quickly?
