May I suggest that ROOT intercepts a "--help" command line option as well as the current "-help" one (which I only discovered via a typo)? I spent some time trying to find how to disable the splash screen, eventually finding it in the mailing list archive, but if "root --help" had worked, I'd have got it first time!
