Thanks, seems to work now (though the new file contains 4 "views" of each original directory --- I don't know if this is normal). I've attached another little patch for hadd which cleans up the error message a little and adds -h and --help handling (a personal obsession, I guess :-) Use it if you like --- I'm sure it can be done better.
