Oh... Now I see you are right! Thank you!

But can this "confusion" be fixed? In original (Knuth) TeX one doesn't have to bother about placing _ or ^ with empty sub(super)script to get correct placing. Are the ROOT TLatex algorithm and TeX algorithm very different?
