Fixed in CVS Head. Please checkout that, and try again. Or as an intermediate fix, remove the file
`build/packages/common/root-xrootd.install.in'.

Debian packages of ROOT 5.06/01 is available for sid (unstable) i386 at

  deb http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root root main

Please try and let us know if you still have problems.
