I've always used "backingstore" ("backstore" is maybe an acceptable alias?). Anyways, it goes in the "Device" section. Here is mine:

Section "Device"

        Identifier      "mga 550 D"
        Driver          "mga"
        BusId           "PCI:1:5:0"
        Option          "MGASDRAM"
        Option          "backingstore"
        Screen          0
