I think that the problem was not really in the graphics, 3D part of it but with the overall philosophy of Iris Explorer. It was clear quite early that LabView-like tool is not what physicists want. OpenInventor-based tools, however, are used by Atlas, LHCb and CMS and users seem to be quite happy with them. And not only that, all those tools are using the same HEP-wide foundation - HEPVis (which is one of the rare examples if HEP-wide standard). So it seems to me quite strange that LCG-Root comp. has chosen not to re-use existing OpenInventor/HEPVis foundation but start a new, Root-only, solution. And, as is often the case with Root, its 3D API is surprisingly similar to OpenInventor one - but different and certainly incompatible.

                 Julius
