compile root

Dear ROOTers
maybe this is and old topic, but I didn't find any F.A.Q. about this... My question is about how compile ROOT with different gcc versions. For istance I have in my laptop gcc 3.4 and 4.1.2,  is it possible to type ./configure CXX=/usr/bin/gcc3.4 or something like that?
