Mark doesn't "want 5.17", but he wants (I guess) pre-compiled Debian/Ubuntu packages of ROOT - and unfortunately, 5.17 is currently the most reason version available as Ubuntu packages.

I guess Mark didn't want to rebuild ROOT from source, or found it so much easier to do

        sudo apt-get install root-system

The reason why 5.17 is the latest version of the Debian packages is that it's the last version I built packages of. The reason I built packages of a Development release was because I was fixing problems in the ROOT SVN trunk (or CVS HEAD - I can't remember what it was at the time).

5.18 should hopefully soon hit the repository at http://mirror.phy.bnl.gov/debian-root, followed by 5.19.03 shortly thereafter. We (Kevin and I) are aiming at getting ROOT 5.18 into the release of Debian "lenny" scheduled to be released in autumn. Unfortunately, the release of 5.20 is a little too late for it to go into "lenny". However, I'll try to package it for the above "unoffical" repository.
