I would like to call your attention that package in question, namely sky_viewer uses QGLViewer class.

This class *is* included into the QtRoot extension. http://root.bnl.gov/QtRoot/htmldoc/TQtGLViewerWidget.html
This means as soon as you use QtRoot-plugins, you can use that application directly from within your ROOT application / macros..
The current version of QGLViewer included into QtRoot distribution is
2.2.1.
I see no problem to upgrade to 2.2.4 if needed. Let me know.
