I have things working on a 32 bit version, and it does what I need. Since this works for me, and I don't require a 64bit install, and I don't have time to debug this issue right now, I'm going to just be happy with the 32bit Fedora 9 installation.

But, to answer your question, I made no special requests on for the configure. I just used ./configure arch.

  This is indeed curious. I can only come up with two issues.

  1. You are enabling some features that I am not.
  2. There is an issue with the installed libraries on your system.

I'm guessing it's more likely that you are enabling some features I am not. Can you tell me which settings you pass to configure? I'll try to compile with those settings too. I recalled at some point you mailed your Makefile.config but now I can't find it.

The biggest difference that I can think I do is disabling the builtin ROOT libraries that are already in the Fedora, but I can't see how that should affect the compilation that much. I'll certainly try to help.
