Hi Francesco,

In a lot of case, the ROOT file produced are 'forward' compatible and can be read by
older version of ROOT, however in a few cases you can indeed produce file that is not
forward compatible with specific older version. For example in ROOT v5.12, we change
the default to be a better compression algorithm that is not readable by the older version
of ROOT v4. In this case you can select the older compression algorithm in order to
write 'forward' compatible files.

So the exact answer to your question depend on which 2 version of ROOT you are trying to
match.
