One more thing: I have the impression this might be due to running multiple interactive ROOT/PROOF sessions on one machine, all connecting to an xrootd also running on the same box. I cannot prove it, but I had the feeling that things were more stable before I started running multiple interactive ROOT/PROOF sessions in parallel.
