problems with libpcre

Hello
Trying to install root-5.14 on ubuntu 8.10 with gcc-4.1 anf gfortran

After installing root and trying to run it I get the following error: root.exe: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I configured root with:
./configure linux --enable-builtin-pcre

but that creates a libpcre.a library, not the shared object libpcre.so.0
