Well, to be true, 5.18/00 did go in to the *official* distribution.

For Alex's option "A", I hope that anyone interested in working on that effort knows about Debian's alioth.debian.org and Ubuntu's launchpad.net free hosting. These are natural places for a group of people to work together to provide up-to-date packages.
