Yeah, it seemed that the Gate installation instructions were telling me to give --prefix a strange directory, e.g. in this case $PWD the root source directory itself. Following directions precisely in this case broke the root installation. I used --prefix=/usr/local and root was installed into a more sane location, after which the benchmarkPET.C macro was able to run without errors.
