Hi,
If you have to go back to the old ROOT version, for whatever reason, it should be possible. You will just have to use a different compiler to the system one. Either install it yourself, and then build root using it, or if you use MacPorts (or Fink) you could just use the one from them. I use macPorts myself, and that provides a selection of different compilers (run 'port search gcc' to list them).
