Dear Mandla - there exist ROOT-compatible C++ classes for extracting your data from MIDAS .mid and .mid.gz data files into your ROOT analysis environement: http://daq-plone.triumf.ca/SR/rootana (read the README file).
Because MIDAS data files usually contain raw data in the format produced by your experiment hardware (i.e. VME ADCs and TDCs), "conversion to ROOT format" tends to be highly experiment specific - generic software that can be used by every experiment using every possible hardware is impossible.
But worry not - we have some example software to deal with data for the more common VME modules from CAEN and other vendors. A good place to find this kind of stuff and to interact with other people who do this kind of stuff is the MIDAS forum at https://ladd00.triumf.ca/elog/Midas/
