Thanks for checking. I tried your test and got the same results so I went looking for the problem somewhere else. It turns out I was getting fooled by the display program I was using ("eog" = "Eye of Gnome"). It apparently interprets the filename given on its command line as an instruction to open all images in the current directory. Doh! Sorry for the noise....
