which Linux for ROOT

Hi,
Due to a HD crash I've got the privilege to install everything from
scratch ( no backups ). As I would like to get the root executable
working, I would like to know what are the plans concerning Linux.
The current root is described as Linux.2.0.31 which describes the kernel,
but a much more interesting issue is the C library. Which version do you
use NOW ? Which version will you use in near future ??
It might happen that you use libc5.3, or libc5.4, or glibc ( 2.0 ? )
I think I decided to use the RedHat distribution, but I have two
possibilities :
	1. RedHad 4.2 - kernel 2.0.32, libc.5.3
	2. RedHat 5.0 - kernel 2.0.32, glibc ( GNU C lib 2.0 ? )
As you see in both cases the kernel is 2.0.32 which should not be a
problem as compared to 2.0.31, but the C library might certainly be.
Up to now I used libc5.3, but as I wrote above I've got the luck ( bad
luck ) to setup my Linux once more.
Another interesting issue would be the GCC compiler version, I think.
Thanks in advance,
Jacek.
