Hi Rutger,

   something like ROOTSYS is wrong since this message indicates that
the scrollbar widget can not find its up and down icons. They should
be in $ROOTSYS/icons. Actually the icon  search path can be set in .rootrc
and the default is:

Gui.IconPath:      $HOME/icons:$ROOTSYS/icons:.

So check if it exists.
