Hi Rutger,

   use TGCompositeFrame::HideFrame(TGFrame *) and ShowFrame()
see http://root.cern.ch/root/html/TGCompositeFrame.html.
It is used in:
http://root.cern.ch/root/html/src/TRootBrowser.cxx.html#TRootBrowser:ShowToolBar
